Martin B-26B Marauder #41-31695 was in active service for the 387th Bombardment Group's entire combat tour. It was one of the original fourteen aircraft assigned to the 556th Bombardment Squadron before being ferried to England. It was part of both the group's first bombing mission on August 15, 1943, against the St. Omer-Ft. Rouge airdrome, and its last on April 26, 1945, against oil storage tanks at Schrobenhausen, Germany. The crew originally tried to name the aircraft "4Q" but the powers that be thought the name too vulgar. The crew changed the spelling to "Q Q Q Q" but did not change the pronunciation. Designed to meet a US Army Air Corps specification for a twin-engined medium bomber, the B-26 Marauder was first flown on November 25, 1940. Early in its service career, the B-26 was nicknamed "Widowmaker" because of its high accident statistics, especially during takeoffs and landings, when pilots were required to maintain a much higher than average speed to avoid stalling. Later model B-26Bs underwent a series of aerodynamics modifications, making the aircraft safer to fly. Used in the Pacific, Western European and Mediterranean Theaters, the B-26 eventually became the primary bomber on the Western Front, ending the war with fewer losses than any other USAAF bomber. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
