US Navy Attack Squadron 86 (VA-86) Sidewinders was the new designation given to VF-921 on July 1st, 1955. The squadron transitioned from the F7U Cutlass to the A-4 Skyhawk before becoming the first operational squadron to upgrade to the A-7 Corsair II in June, 1967. The Sidewinders deployed many times with the A-7 on various Nimitz class carriers. The squadron was re-designated Navy Strike Fighter Squadron 86 (VFA-86) on July 15th, 1987 when it transitioned to the F/A-18 Hornet.

McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C Hornet

Designed as a replacement for the A-4 Skyhawk and the A-7 Corsair II and as a complement to the F-14 Tomcat, the F/A-18 first flew on November 18, 1978. Perhaps best known as the aircraft of the US Navy's Blue Angels, this carrier-capable, supersonic, all-weather fighter has many roles, including fighter escort, fleet air defense and close air support. The F/A-18 is a versatile aircraft: it can operate from carriers or land bases and a single switch converts it from fighter to strike mode. During Operation Desert Storm, the F/A-18 proved that, on a single mission, one aircraft could serve as both fighter and a bomber.

DISCLAIMER - Please Read

Please keep in mind that large scale plastic models are not scaled-up versions of their smaller diecast cousins. They are pre-assembled from a large number of components and production compromises are often made to keep them within reach of the casual collector's budget. Factory painting, glueing and alignment discrepencies are often visible upon close inspection.

The models arrive paritially deconstructed and do require time to un-package and assemble prior to display. Assembly mostly consists of pushing together snap-fitting parts although a little attention with a sharp hobby knife and/or superglue is sometimes required to achieve the best fit.

In summary, with a little effort, these models can make fantastic, attention-grabbing showpieces from a reasonable viewing distance. Up close however, their more toy-like qualities will become apparent. We regret that we are unable to accept returns on these items for minor fit and finish issues.
