PR XVI NS502 of 544 Squadron was delivered on 23rd May 1944 and operated over Europe until it crashlanded on 21st February 1945. It then passed to Martin Hearn for repair and was eventually transferred to the Royal Navy at RNAS Fleetlands on 7th November 1947. 544 Squadron were involved heavily in the build up to D-Day, June 6th 1944 and flew special rail sorties in daylight to France in an effort to detect any movement of Panzers towards the Normandy beachhead as early as possible. If any movement was spotted the crew had to land at Farnborough and give a verbal report to SHEAF HQ who would then send out interdiction bombing by 2nd TAF medium bombers. Their use throughout this period both before, during and after D-Day, June 6th 1944 became integral in the success that followed and the aircraft were adorned with D-Day, June 6th 1944 stripes around the fuselage and wings.
Designed in a private venture as a high-altitude, high-speed unarmed bomber, the de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito was first flown on November 25th, 1940. The Mosquito was one of the most successful aircraft of the Second World War. Only the Ju 88 could rival its versatility. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, the all-wood Mosquito was as fast as a fighter and could carry the payload of a medium bomber. During its lifetime, the Mosquito was used in varying roles, which included night fighter and ground attack. Corgi's 1:32 scale Mosquito is a massive model constructed with a large number of diecast metal components. All of the control surfaces are movable, including positionable radiator ducts and flaps that move in unison around each engine nacelle. The articulating main landing gear and tail wheel are beautifully detailed and lock easily in place for ground display. The side engine cowlings are removable, revealing detailed Merlin V-12 engines. The large canopy provides easy viewing of the highly detailed crew figures. The bottom of the model has spring loaded bomb-bay doors that open to reveal ordnance details and crew access door.
