Nothing can be said about the Stuka without mentioning its most famous pilot, Hans-Ulrich Rudel. Born in 1916, the son of a Minister, Rudel received poor education qualifications, but managed to gain entry to the Luftwaffe in 1936 as a Cadet. Passing his flying training he was considered a below average pilot and placed in the role of reconnaissance. With more experience, he applied for Dive Bomber training and in May 1940 was accepted to train on the aircraft which would make him famous, the Ju87 Stuka. After training, Rudel was posted to Stukagwscgwader 2 ( Dive Bomber Group 2) in time for the group to take part in the invasion of Crete. Rudel saw no combat and it was not until 23 June 1941 that Rudel flew his first combat mission in the Eastern Front. During September 1941, Rudel attacked the Soviet Battleship October Revolution in the port of Kronstadt near Leningrad, hitting the ship in its ammunition storage area, and blowing the ship in half. Luftwaffe high command started to notice their new Stuka expert who by early 1943 had flown 1,000 combat missions and became a German National Hero. It was noticed by pilots like Rudel that destroying moving tanks with a single bomb was near impossible, so a new version of the Stuka was introduced into service, the Ju87 D-3 , modified with two 37mm cannons. With this version Rudel destroyed 70 landing craft, and during March 1943 destroyed his first Soviet tank. Designed to function as a close support aircraft, the Ju 87 was first flown on September 17th, 1935. The Ju 87 had an innovative design that included automatic dive brakes under each wing-a feature that protected against the consequences of pilot blackout by ensuring recovery from an attack dive. Crewed by a pilot and rear gunner, the Ju 87 had twin 37mm cannons and a bomb that swung away from the propeller on an elongated U-shaped crutch. Its inverted gull wings improved pilot-to-ground visibility, gave the undercarriage a shorter height and made the Ju 87 instantly recognizable to its enemies. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
