On paper, the Us F4 Phantom II was the hottest thing in the sky, but lack of training in close in combat by the majority of US pilots resulted in high numbers of F4's being out fought and shot down by the MIG-21s. WWII veterans still flying, such as Col Robin Olds (4 kills in Vietnam) used their F4s in the good way by closing in on the MIGs and shooting them down. But the USN/USAF produced only 2 ranking 5 kill aces in Vietnam, compared to 16 VPAF aces. The reason for this is simple – the pilots of the VPAF had a target rich environment, and like the Luftwaffe fighter pilots of WWII they flew until they died. No rotation or rest after a number of missions – they just kept on flying day after day. As a result, those who survived this intense combat became absolute masters of their art, and these experienced pilots passed their lessons down to the younger pilots arriving on the Air regiments. Nguyen Van COC was the highest ace of the Vietnam War with nine victories including a number of F4 Phantom II's. Little is known about these aces and the victory totals cannot be confirmed but it could be much higher with almost four thousand US aircraft falling to fighters and surface to air missiles. Without doubt the Aces of the VPAF were some of the most outstanding fighter pilots of the age of Jet Air Combat. Designed as a successor to the Soviet Union's family of early MiG jet fighters, the MiG-21 was first flown on February 14, 1955. This supersonic jet fighter was the first Soviet aircraft to successfully combine fighter and interceptor characteristics. Its delta wing design gave it the ability to climb quickly and its light loading further improved its performance, making it possible for a skilled pilot to successfully engage in dogfights with contemporary enemy fighters.
