Originally designated as the Su-27K, the Su-33 Sea Flanker is an naval derivative of the highly successful Su-27 design. Featuring canard foreplanes, folding wings and tail surfaces, strengthened landing gear and increased power, the Su-33 has outstanding performance in comparison to the US F-14 Tomcat. Gaincorp have reproduced the graceful lines of this machine in intricate detail with several great features including a large ordnance load, folding wings, opening canopy, moving airbrake and rudders. A large and impressive model, the Su-33 makes an awesome addition to any modern jet fighter collection.
Designed by the Soviet Union to challenge the superiority of fourth generation US fighters such as the F-15 Eagle, the Su-27 was first flown on May 20, 1977. This one seat Mach-2 fighter had the Soviet Union's first operational fly-by-wire system. The aircraft is very large compared to the MiG-29, its closest Soviet counterpart, but it is built with a high percentage of titanium, which helps minimize its weight.
