Volkel AB hosted the Royal Netherlands Air Force F-16 demo team 2009. The team consisted mainly of 313 Squadron members with one coach from 311 Squadron. Aircraft #J-015 was painted as "The Orange Lion" for the season and the display pilot was Captain Ralph "Sheik" Aarts. Although it looks spectacular, the show of the demo team contains maneuvers which can occur during normal operational missions with the F-16. What makes the show special is that all of these maneuvers are smoothly linked together and are performed at very low altitude. During these maneuvers the body of the demo pilot is exposed to enormous positive and negative G forces. The Dutch demo pilot gives an impression of the maneuverability of the F-16 in general and also the skills which every Royal Netherlands Air force F-16 pilot has mastered. Designed by General Dynamics as a lightweight, daytime USAF air-combat fighter, the F-16 was first flown on January 20th, 1974. This single-engine, supersonic aircraft has, over the years, evolved into a multirole aircraft. It has a frameless bubble canopy-giving its pilot superior visibility-and it uses advanced aerodynamics. The F-16 was one of the first designs to use a relaxed static stability/fly-by-wire system, which helps it pull 9-g maneuvers and achieve speeds of more than Mach 2. Called "Viper" by its pilots, the F-16 is considered one of the most successful aircraft designs of the Cold War, with 4,400+ aircraft built since 1976. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
