Along with several other Eastern European countries Austria was a member of NATO and therefore was supplied with several types of U.S. manufactured vehicles. Between 1960 and 1979 Austria received forty-two M41A3 Walker Bulldogs making them the largest foreign user of this tank. In 1957 Austria was equipped with one-hundred-fifty-three M47 Patton tanks that were in use until 1982. Starting in 1972 any retired M47's had their turrets placed in Austrian bunkers. Austria also received thirty-eight M42A1 Dusters that were phased out in 1992 with the end of the Cold War.
