In 1971 the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) purchased their first M60A1 tanks from the U.S.. On October 6, 1973 the Yom Kippur War began with Egypt and Syria against Israel. On October 6th Israel had 540 M48A3 and M60A1 tanks but a large number of these were destroyed by Egyptian anti-tank missiles. The U.S. transferred large numbers of these types of tanks to replace the losses. The Israeli forces stopped Egyptian advances and turned the tide against the two attackers. The war ended October 26, 1973 after a negotiated settlement.
