The Soviet Air Force began a program known as the 1521st Center for Combat Employment, located in Mary, Turkmen SSR, in 1970. The program was prompted by the poor performance of Soviet-supplied aircraft in Vietnam and the Middle East and by the equivalent American programmes. Pilots for these squadrons contained a higher number of highly experienced pilots (distinctions of combat pilot experience in Soviet forces at the time were known as "First Class" and "Sniper" level pilots). These units had a higher proportion of these highly experienced pilot when compared to regular Soviet Air Force units. The 2nd Squadron of the 1521st first flew the MiG-23MLD. There were plans to reequip the squadron with the Su-27 Flanker but instead received high-time MiG-29 airframes. These aircraft also featured sharkmouth markings with other marking consisting of a "sour-faced" hornet superimposed on a red lightning bolt with the letters "AM" (aviabaza Maryy, airbase Marie) above it. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the 2nd Squadron's aircraft were transferred to the Kazakstan Air Force.

Please note: An optional display stand is available separately if you wish to display this model "in-flight".

Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrum-A

Designed to help the Soviet Union attain air superiority, the MiG-29 fighter was first flown on October 6th, 1977. The MiG-29, known as the "Fulcrum," has a high-mounted bubble canopy and twin jet engines with diagonal-shaped air intakes and large exhausts. Its tapered, swept-back wings and boom-mounted tail fins give it its classic look. Armed with medium and short-range missiles and unguided weapons for ground and sea-surface targets, the MiG-29's sight is a helmet-mounted system-the pilot chooses his targets by looking at them. Even today the Fulcrum remains a potent adversary, and will remain in service for at least another decade.

JC's 1:72 scale MiG-29 is constructed almost entirely of diecast metal, with careful attention paid to even the smallest of details. This is a model with many movable parts, including a hinged canopy, deployable speed breaks and movable rudders with correctly replicated actuator mechanism. The landing gear is highly detailed, with rivets inside the gear doors, separately applied transparent landing lights, structural detail inside the wheel wells and a detailed splash fender. The auxiliary air inlet's louvers seamlessly blend with the upper fuselage. Fully armed with a 30mm cannon and three different missile types, this model is available as the single-seat A variant or two-seat B variant.
