The Macchi M.C. 72 was an experimental seaplane designed and built by the Italian aircraft company Macchi Aeronautica. A total of five aircraft were built and on 23 October 1934, Francesco Agello piloted the an M.C.72 for an average speed of 440 mph over three passes. A record that remains unbroken to this day as the fastest speed ever attained by a piston-engine seaplane. After this success, the M.C.72 was never flown again. This aircraft is now preserved at the Italian Air Force Museum, near Rome.
Please note: Although the box for this model identifies it as 1:100 scale, the actual model dimensions are larger and it is in fact 1:72 scale.
Deisgned by Mario Castoldi to compete for the 1931 Schneider Trophy, the MC.72 was first flown in June, 1931. The sleek fuselage housed a pair of 1,500hp Fiat A.S.5 engines, each turning one of the contra-rotating propellors, eliminating the torque issues that plagued high-performance raceplanes of the era.
