Forces of Valor 80093
M24 Chaffee Diecast Model
US Army 117th Cavalry Reconnaissance, Germany, 1945, w/1 Figure

1:32 Scale   Length   Width
M24 Chaffee   6.75"   3.5"

In April 1943 the Ordnance Corps together with Cadillac division of General Motors started work on the new project, designated Light Tank T24. Every effort was made to keep the weight of the vehicle under 20 tons. The armour was kept light, with the glacis plate only 25 mm thick (but sloped at 60 degrees from the vertical). A new lightweight 75 mm gun was developed, a derivative of the gun used in the B-25H Mitchell bomber The gun had the same ballistics as the M3 but used a thinly walled barrel and different recoil mechanism. The design also featured wider (16 inch) tracks and torsion bar suspension. It had relatively low silhouette and a three-man turret. On October 15, 1943 the first pilot vehicle was delivered and production began in 1944 under the designation Light Tank M24. It was produced at two sites; from April at Cadillac. By the time production was stopped in August 1945, 4,731 M24s had left the assembly lines. Some of them were supplied to the British forces.

M24 Chaffee

Designed as a more heavily armored improvement over the M3/M5 Light Tanks, the M24 entered production in 1944. To help keep weight down, the front of the hull featured a realtively thin (approximately 1 inch thick) glacis, raked back at a 60 degree angle while armament was provided in the form of a lightweight 75mm gun, developed from the one on the B-25H Mitchell. While the larger gun was a significant improvement over that of the M5, the light armour still left the M24 vulnerable to most German tanks of the era.

Forces of Valor's 1:32 scale M24 Chaffee Tank is a sporty looking model. The models in this series are constructed almost entirely of plastic, which allows for maximum details welding bead seams and the simulated look of cast metal seen on the guns mantlet. The 360 degree rotating turret features a moveable M2 Browning machine gun, removable crew figure, two metal antennas and pivoting metal cannon. The hull features separately applied battlefield equipment that is molded to contour the hull's surface for a realistic fit. Each release has rolling rubber tracks and wheels, and a nicely detailed metal underside with maintenance access panels.
