The Sd.Kfz.179 Bergepanther was an armoured recovery vehicle was based on the Panther Tank chassis. Since Panther or Tiger tanks that were too heavy for exisiting recovery vehicles to tow, a heavy duty tank recovery vehicle was needed. Tigers at the time were also much more valued than Panthers considering that they were produced in fewer numbers so naturally the Panther was the chosen base from which to create the new armored recovery vehicle. These vehicles produced by MAN were subsequently shipped off to serve during the Battle of Kursk and in other battles until the end of the war. Around two to four Bergepanthers were allocated to each tank unit making up for a total of around 330 vehicles produced during the war, mainly by the company Demag. Designed to replace to the PzKpfw IV, which had met its match in the new Soviet T-34, the Panzerkampfwagen V "Panther" series of heavy tanks were armed with powerful weapons and equally powerful armor protection. Thought by many to be the best German tank of WWII, the Panther featured a sloped armored turret with a long barrel 75mm main gun and an anti-aircraft 7.92mm machine gun. It was equipped with anti-magnetic paste to combat magnetic mines, and armor skirts offered further protection for the track system and crew.
