Luftwaffe Fighter Squadron 71 (Jagdgeschwader 71) was formed in 1959 as West Germany's first operational Jet Fighter squadron. The squadron was initially equipped with the Canadair Sabre and later flew the F-104 Starfighter before moving on to the F-4 Phantom II in 1974. In 2009, the squadron celebrated its 50 Anniversary and painted one of it's F-4 in this striking paint-scheme, depicting the famous Red Baron Fokker Dr.I triplane on its tail, in honor of the squadron's "Richthofen" title. The underside of the aircraft was also painted with silhouettes of the Sabre and Starfighter. Designed as a fleet defense fighter for the US Navy, the F-4 Phantom was first flown on May 27, 1958. This twin-engine, long-range all-weather fighter/bomber proved highly adaptable and served in the Marine Corps and the US Air Force as well as in the Navy. During the Vietnam War, it was the principal air superiority fighter for the Navy and the Air Force and was also used for reconnaissance and ground attack. The Phantom continued to serve well into the 1970s and 1980s and even flew missions during the first Gulf War.
