The Polish 1st Armoured Division was formed in Scotland on February 25, 1941. The Division fought in Normandy, through France, Belgium and the Netherlands before entering Germany in the Emsland area on April 8, 1945. On May 5, 1945 German forces capitulated and on May 6, 1945 the Polish 1st Armored Division occupied the German Naval Base at Wilhemhaven. They remained in northwest Germany as the occupation power until the Division was disbanded. Most Polish soldiers didn't return to Soviet occupied Poland and chose to live in exile.
