The Avro Vulcan first equipped No.27 Squadron in April 1961, when it reformed with Vulcan Mk2 Blue Steel bombers at RAF Scampton. It was disbanded for a short time before re-forming in the early '70s in the Maritime Radar Reconnassance (MRR) role at nearby Waddington, Lincolnshire. In the early 1970s, the traditional Elephant insignia used by No.27 Squadron since it was formed, was amended on the Vulcans to that of Walt Disney's 'Dumbo', being quite appropriate for the Vulcan! Surveillance sorties were flown in an area stretching from the North Cape down to the Mediterranean, locating, shadowing and photographing Soviet shipping. The Squadron disbanded once more in March 1982 and XM595 went for scrapping in November of that year. Designed as a nuclear bomber capable of operating from any base in the world, the Vulcan was first flown on August 30th, 1952.© Copyright 2003-2009 The Flying Mule, Inc.
