The Boeing E-3 Sentry is the West's principal AWACS (airborne warning and control system) platform. Using the airframe of a Boeing 707-320B airliner and a massive payload of radar and electronic sensors, the E-3/AWACS is a flying headquarters for command, control, communications and intelligence. 71-1407 was the first of two EC-1370 AWACS prototypes, which first flew on 5th February 1972. Both prototypes were upgraded to E-3A operational standard and were part of the thirty four aircraft procured by the USAF, of which the first production E-3A flew on 31st October 1975 and first delivery was made in March 1977 to the 552nd AC&CW at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. 71-1407. as the prototype aircraft, became the personal aircraft of the Wing Commander and received special markings accordingly.
