In 2009, this Sea King was painted in its original blue colour to mark both the 100th year of naval aviation and the 40th anniversary of the Sea King entering naval service. Since delivery of the first aircraft in 1969, the Sea King has been at the forefront of UK military service, and 96 examples continue to be operated by both the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. When Sea Kings first entered naval service they were all painted dark blue, and remained so until the late 80s, when following the Falklands War, they were repainted grey. Assigned to No. 771 Naval Air Sqn at RNAS Culdrose, and now flown as a Mark HU.5, XV648 first entered service in October 1969 as a HAS.Mk.1 and is the second oldest Sea King still in RN use.
Designed for the US Navy as an anti-submarine hunter/killer, the Sea King was first flown on March 11th, 1959. The Sikorsky SH-3 is used as both a combat and medevac/transport aircraft. In its transport role, it can shuttle more than 20 wounded or 28 combat-ready personnel. The SH-3 is also noted in its role as Marine One—the transport helicopter for the President of the United States—and in the recovery of the Apollo 14 crew. Corgi’s 1:72 scale Sea Kings are quite large, with each release featuring a variety of transparent window configurations on the port side. These models feel surprisingly heavy for 1:72 scale. Two sets of rotor blades are included, one with drooping blades for ground display and another with blades that are curved upwards for in-flight display. The “green-house” canopy with a variety of tinting is large, allowing for easy viewing of the cockpit interior and crew figures. Each release highlights one of many engine intake configurations and radar domes. The sliding cargo door opens effortlessly to expose an expansive cargo-hold.
