The first operational B-25s to serve with the RAF were B-25Cs and Ds which were designated Mitchell Mk.II by the RAF. Te Mitchell Mk.II served with the No.2 Group, the RAF's tactical medium bomber force. These planes were assigned to Nos.98, 180, 226 and 329 squadrons. THe RAF Mitchells generally retained the retractable ventral turret since protection from below was absolutely essential for medium-altitude bombing operations over Europe. In the build up to D-Day, June 6th 1944, some Mitchell's were based in Holland, including No.226 squadron which were successfully deployed in operations in that theatre.

North American B-25 Mitchell

First flown in August, 1940 The North American B-25 Mitchell became standard equipment for the allies in World War II. This twin-engine bomber was the most heavily armed airplane in the world. It was used for high- and low-level bombing, strafing, photoreconnaissance, submarine patrol and as a fighter. There were at least six major variants of the Mitchell, which included upgrades to power-operated two-gun turrets, the "greenhouse" style nose, and the 75mm cannon (one of the largest weapons fitted to an aircraft). The B-25 is perhaps most famous for its use in the Doolittle raid on Tokyo on April 18th, 1942.

Corgi's 1:72 scale B-25 series includes many variants, with features such as large greenhouse birdcage nose canopies and different engine cowlings. The most notable feature of this series is the variety of defensive and offensive gun emplacements found in each release, such as different tail gunner configurations, top turret positions and waist gunner positions. Additionally, different side-mounted guns on the sides of the fuselage used for strafing runs, waist gunners and a non-extendable ball turret are also featured on some releases. The bomb doors open to reveal two detailed 1,000 lb bombs and a nicely detailed bomb bay.
