The Panzer V, or Panther, was produced to counter the Soviet threat. It proved a very effective tank and was produced in large numbers, around 5,500, in three main models - D, A, and G. The Panther had very thick front armor and sloping front plates, which protected it well in head-on assaults. Its 75mm high-velocity gun also proved to be very effective in piercing the armor of Allied tanks. In 1943 very limited numbers of the new Panther were sent to the Italian theater painted in the basic factory-applied dunkelgelb, or dark yellow. Units were instructed to apply camouflage patterns of stripes and patches of dark olive green and dark chocolate brown.
Designed to replace to the PzKpfw IV, which had met its match in the new Soviet T-34, the Panzerkampfwagen V "Panther" series of heavy tanks were armed with powerful weapons and equally powerful armor protection. Thought by many to be the best German tank of WWII, the Panther featured a sloped armored turret with a long barrel 75mm main gun and an anti-aircraft 7.92mm machine gun. It was equipped with anti-magnetic paste to combat magnetic mines, and armor skirts offered further protection for the track system and crew. Approximately 5,500 Panthers were built during WWII. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
