On January 15, the Leningrad Front launched two strong attacks, one south of the city and the other from the pocket around Oranienbaum to the east. On January 19 the Soviet troops completed the liberation of Leningrad. Thereafter the entire left flank of Army Group North cracked. On February 13 they were forced to order the army group back into the Panther Line, the Narva River-Lake Peipus-Lake Pskov section of the East Wall. The Panther Line was the only major part of the wall on which substantial work had been done, and when the army group reached it on March 1, it held.
Designed to replace to the PzKpfw IV, which had met its match in the new Soviet T-34, the Panzerkampfwagen V "Panther" series of heavy tanks were armed with powerful weapons and equally powerful armor protection. Thought by many to be the best German tank of WWII, the Panther featured a sloped armored turret with a long barrel 75mm main gun and an anti-aircraft 7.92mm machine gun. It was equipped with anti-magnetic paste to combat magnetic mines, and armor skirts offered further protection for the track system and crew. Approximately 5,500 Panthers were built during WWII. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
