100 Years of Flight

December 2003 marks the 100th anniversary of manned, powered flight and Corgi Showcase is proud to commemorate this historic milestone with a comprehensive collection of twenty pioneering and iconic aircraft from the past century. From the Wright brothers to the first moon landing, all are covered in a series of five themed categories, which can be collected individually or in sets of four. As an added bonus Corgi are also producing a unique 100 Years of Flight Time-Line. Designed to display all 20 aircraft models from the 100 Years of Flight Collection, plus the collector data cards, the time line charts the development of flight through ten decades of advancement. It builds not only into an attractive display, but also a highly educational chronology of aviation history.

Lockheed F-16C Fighting Falcon

Designed by General Dynamics to function as a lightweight USAF air-combat fighter, the F-16 was first flown on January 20th, 1974. This highly aerodynamic single-engine aircraft is one of the most successful aircraft designs of the Cold War. It has a mid-monoplane wing design, with the centerline of the fuselage dominated by a broad-mouth intake opening. It can carry a multitude of different weaponry, from runway-denial munitions and air-to-air missiles to anti-armor and anti-radar homing missiles, drop bombs and Maverick air-to-ground missiles. Under its large, clear-vision canopy the pilot is assisted by an array of digital systems including fly-by-wire controls.

Grumman F-14A Tomcat

Designed to carry the formidable long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat was first flown on December 21st, 1970. Made famous by the Hollywood film Top Gun, the F-14 replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter. Its design includes a variable geometry wing that can sweep back for high speed supersonic intercepts and forward for improved positioning in air to air dogfights. Nicknamed “Bombcat," the F-14 spent much of its late career in an air-to-ground role, carrying the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system.

McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II

The twin-engine, two-seat, all-weather attack/fighter F-4 Phantom II first flew on May 27th, 1958. The Phantom performed three tactical air roles—air superiority, interdiction and close air support—and was also a capable tactical reconnaissance and Wild Weasel (suppression of enemy air defenses) aircraft. It was armed with missiles and was the first Navy fighter that did not use guns. In air combat the Phantom's powerful thrust permitted a skilled pilot to engage and disengage from the fight at will.

BAe Harrier

The Harrier—a British-designed military jet capable of Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing (VSTOL)—was first flown on August 31st, 1966. Versions are in use by several NATO countries, including the United States, Spain, and Italy. Control nozzles apply downward thrust, which allows the Harrier to behave as a helicopter and take off vertically or use a minimum of runaway distance to achieve forward momentum. The Harrier is typically operated from small aircraft carriers, and its high-tech radar gives it the ability to fly without much support. Retired by the Royal Navy in 2006, the U.S. F-35 will replace the Harrier sometime in 2010.
