German paratroops, or Fallschirmjagers, first saw action in Poland, 1939, followed by Norway, Holland, Belgium and Greece. The spectacular success of these early campaigns leads to the greatest German airborne offensive of the warm airborne assault on Crete in 1941. German paratroopers played important parts in the defensive actions in Sicily, Italy and the attempts to stem the allied advance in Normandy, France.
