Corgi Forward March US59106
Luftwaffe, Major Walter Nowotny, Fighter Ace
Austrian by birth, Walter Nowotny flew almost exclusively against the Soviet Red Air Force in his beloved Focke-Wulf Fw 190. Assigned to Jagdgeschwader 54 'Green Hearts', his skill at the controls of this machine saw him credited with an astounding 258 aircraft shot down. The first pilot to claim 200 and 250 victories (both in 1943), Nowotny was awarded the Knight's Cross, and subsequently the Oak Leaves with Swords to this decoration. In the autumn of 1944 he was selected to head an experimental Me 262 jet fighter units dubbed Commando Nowotny, and he was killed in combat in a Messerschmitt fighter whilst attacking US heavy bombers on 6 of November.
