Messerschmitt Bf 109G Diecast Model
Luftwaffe III/JG 77, "Black 6", North Africa, 1942, w/Compass Platform Diorama

1:72 Scale   Length   Width
Messerschmitt Bf 109G   5"   5.5"

Designed by Willy Messerscmitt, the Me109 was a hugely successful fighter built by Germany. With 30,573 units manufactured, it was produced in higher quantities than any other fighter in history. Indeed, the Me 109 alone accounted for 47% of all German WWII aircraft production! A number of variants were produced over the course of its lifetime, and the availability of the 1475hp Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine gave rise to the G-series. In this “Gustav” series, the G2 was the first production variant that began appearing in 1942.

And now, Dragon’s mouthwatering Warbirds series welcomes a newcomer to its ranks. It’s an Me109G-2 Trop of III./JG 77, the “Trop” signifying it was designed to operate in the extreme heat of North Africa or the Mediterranean. Jagdgeschwader 77 Herz As (“Ace of Hearts”) served in every front at some stage of WWII, but III./JG 77 arrived in North Africa in October 1942. The wing saw extensive combat against the Desert Air Force, and many aces added to their impressive tallies, with a total of 333 aerial victories recorded. The aircraft model itself is superbly produced and finished, painted in a desert camouflage scheme. To make this model unique, the Me109G-2 comes mounted on a compass platform, a special piece of equipment designed to raise the tail of an aircraft to allow it to test its guns on the ground. The diorama base with this special ramp and realistic looking desert landscape makes this a truly inspirational piece to have in any aircraft collection!

Messerschmitt Bf 109G

Designed by Willy Messerschmitt during Germany's military build-up in the 1930s, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was first flown on May 28th, 1935. Messerschmitt engineers placed a big 12-cylinder engine in a small airframe, and made that airframe easy to produce and repair. Armed with two cannons and a pair of machine guns, the Bf 109 was the backbone of the Luftwaffe fighter force, shooting down more Allied planes than any other aircraft. The Germans maintained this advantage until the Battle of Britain, where more than 600 Bf-109s were downed by powerful adversaries, most notably RAF Spitfires and the P-51 Mustang.

Dragon’s Bf 109 series includes the early E model and the later aerodynamically improved G model with a “tropical” air filter for tropical/desert theatre releases. This model’s optional center mounted drop tank is easy to configure and installs quickly. The one-piece main gear subassembly is robust and easily slips and locks into place. The canopy is configurable and can be displayed in the open position, allowing for easy viewing of the cockpit interior and instrument panel details. The rudders are moveable on both variants as are the flaps on the G model, a feature uncommon in 1:72 scale.
