Dragon Models 1:144 Warbirds 51032
North American X-15A Display Model
USAF, #56-6671, Scott Crossfield, Edwards AFB, CA, Maiden Flight, November 15th 1960

1:144 Scale   Length   Width
North American X-15A   4.25"   1.75"

This model represents the second of three prototype aircraft that were produced for the X-15 flight test program. This was the first craft to be flown with the single XLR99-RM-2 liquid-fuel rocket engine that produced 250kN of thrust, its maiden flight occurring on 15 November 1960. The model captures perfectly the cylindrical form of the X-15 with its thick dorsal and ventral stabilizers. It also carries the correct US Air Force (USAF) markings for the craft boasting the serial number '56-6671'. Another unique aspect to this new scale model is the retractable landing gear consisting of a nose wheel and two rear skis. This enables owners to depict their X-15 in landing or on-the-ground mode.

North American X-15A

Designed as a hypersonic research aircraft for the X-Series of USAF/USN sponsored experimental aircraft, the X-15 was first flown on June 8th, 1959 (Unpowered) and September 17th, 1959 (Powered). The X-15 was not capable of conventional take-off, instead being dropped from a B-52 at altitude prior to firing its rocket engines. Three X-15s were built, completing a total of 199 flights between them, setting many altitude and speed records along the way. The highest flight took place on August 22nd, 1963 reaching an altitude of 67 miles, while the fastest flight was on October 3rd, 1967 reaching 4,519mph.

Dragon's 1:144 scale X-15 is a fast looking model constructed entirely of plastic with an internal metal weight to enhance overall feel. Many fine scale features are replicated such as the razor thin wings and tail plane. The front of the fuselage features an exceptionally fine and delicate air data sensor probe mounted to the nose and simulated cockpit windows angled for speed. The rear features exhaust nozzle details of the two XLR-11 rocket engines, delicate fuel intake ports and two wedged-shaped vertical tails. The model mounts to an elegant display stand that angles it to the heavens above.
