Lockheed C-130 Hercules Diecast Model
USAF National Science Foundation, (LC-130R)

1:400 Scale   Length   Width
Lockheed C-130 Hercules   3"   4"

While the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft is extremely well known, the LC-130R is not nearly so famous. In actual fact, the LC-130R is a ski-equipped variant of the C-130 designed for use in the Antarctic and Arctic. Purchased by the National Science Foundation in the mid-1970s, a total of five LC-130R aircraft were given more powerful engines and wing-mounted external fuel tanks. One of these specialist aircraft (registration no. 73-3300) features in the Dragon Warbird range. The miniature is accurately produced in 1/400 scale, the first Warbird item to feature in this scale for quite some time. However, the wait has been well worth it! The model aircraft is resplendent in its high-visibility paint scheme, very necessary in the snowy environments in which the original aircraft operates in. All details such as the retractable skis have been accurately rendered, and the level of finish is exemplary. These LC-130R aircraft continue to serve with the 109th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard, their primary mission being to support the scientific community at McMurdo Station and elsewhere in Antarctica.

Lockheed C-130 Hercules

Designed to function as a troop, medical evacuation and cargo transport aircraft, the C-130 Hercules was first flown on August 23rd, 1954. Built by Lockheed and capable of over 40,000 lbs of payload, this four-engine turboprop aircraft is quite possibly the most versatile tactical transport in existence. Its modern roles include airlift and airdrop, electronic surveillance, search and rescue, space-capsule recovery, helicopter refueling and aerial attack. Capable of takeoffs and landings from unprepared runways, the C-130 has even landed and taken off from a carrier deck without benefit of arresting gear or catapults.
