Lockheed C-5C Galaxy Diecast Model
USAF 60th AMW, 22nd AS, #68-0213, Travis AFB, CA

1:400 Scale   Length   Width
Lockheed C-5C Galaxy   7.5"   6.75"

The 60th Air Mobility Wing (60 AMW) is the host unit at Travis Air Force Base in California. It is the largest air mobility organization in the United States Air Force and is responsible for strategic airlift and aerial refueling missions around the world. Wing activity is primarily focused in the Pacific and Indian Ocean area, including Alaska and Antarctica. Its mission is to provide rapid, reliable airlift of American fighting forces anywhere on earth in support of national objectives and to extend the reach of American and allied air power through mid-air refueling.

Despite their massive size, two C-5 aircraft were especially modified by removing the rear passenger compartment floor and splitting the rear cargo door in the middle. These so-called C-5C versions are able to accommodate odd-sized loads such as satellites for NASA. These two USAF C-5C Galaxy aircraft are based at Travis Air Force Base in California at the disposal of NASA. Dragon Warbirds newest item shows one of these C-5C aircraft. It is finished in the colors and markings of the 22nd Airlift Wing. The die-cast model is beautifully finished with sharp panel lines and well-defined markings. For the ultimate transport aircraft, this C-5C model is hard to beat!

Lockheed C-5C Galaxy

Designed to meet a USAF requirement for a heavy logistics transport, the C-5 was first flown on June 30th, 1968. The t-tail configuration provides unobstructed access to the large rear loading ramp which, in combination with the massive hinged nose, allows for "drive-through" loading and unloading of cargo. The C-5 is one of the largest military aircraft ever built and its cavernous cargo compartment measures 121 feet long by 19 feet wide and 13.5 feet high. This is in addition to an upper deck with seating for 73 passengers. Current versions of the aircraft are capable of lifting up to 270,000 lbs of cargo.

Dragon's 1:400 C-5 is a large model in this scale and is constructed almost entirely of solid diecast metal with an intelligent blend of plastic components. The fuselage and wings are cast as a single unit from solid diecast metal yielding a smooth seamless joint providing for most the model's weight. This models extra-wide body fuselage is wonderfully sculpted and features pad-printed windows and doors that do not interrupt the lines of the aircraft. Each wing integrates six accurately replicated flap track fairings at the rear with fan blade details clearly visible in each of the four engines.
