Vehicle number 332 was a lumbering Elefant serving with 3.Kompanie of sPzJgAbt 653 in Poland in April 1944. The mighty tank hunter was armed with an 8.8cm PaK 43/2 gun, and was painted in a camouflage scheme of bold ‘squiggles’ of colour. Dragon Armor brings an exact replica of this very vehicle, complete with a beautiful scale rendition of the Elefant’s anti-magnetic paste (called zimmerit by the Germans) used to prevent Russian mines from being attached to the hull. The tank destroyer has full detailing as well as an accurately weathered finish. The Elefant (Sd.Kfz. 184) was an anti-tank vehicle sometimes called the Ferdinand, after its designer Mr. Ferdinand Porsche. Ninety Elefanten were manufactured in just a few months during mid-1943. It was first deployed during the Battle of Kursk and, though destroying 320 Russian tanks, performed very poorly in other respects: many units broke down and they proved dangerously vulnerable to infantry, lacking a machine gun. They went on to serve in Italy in 1944 and the final units were involved in the Battle of Berlin. Dragon’s Ferdinand series includes both early and updated variants, with later versions featuring a machine gun in the front of the hull and a commander’s cupola. Models in this series are constructed almost entirely of diecast plastic, which helps to highlight even the smallest details such as welding beads and intricate Zimmerit coatings. Each release features a pivoting 88mm anti-tank cannon with a detailed muzzle break. The model’s underside features detailed maintenance access panels and detailed suspension. Separately applied track repair gear provides the extra equipment needed in the battlefield. The Dragon Models "1:72 Dragon Armor" range presents highly-detailed, ready-made diecast models of military vehicles. Dragon Armor diecast tanks require no glueing or painting. Each model is an instant display piece or diorama centerpiece straight from the box. Made from diecast metal and plastic components, the die cast tanks in the Dragon Armour series are 100% true to scale... these don't look like model tanks, they look like tanks!. Color, camouflage and unit markings are carefully researched for maximum authenticity, marking the difference between and authentic scale model tank and a "toy" tank. Dragon Models "Dragon Armor" diecast vehicles feature: - Diecast metal and plastic construction.
- Rotating turret, elevating cannon and accurate hull.
- Painted, fitted, non-moving tracks on detailed non-rotating wheels.
- Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
- Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.
- Clear acrylic display case to protect model.
German Panzerjäger tanks—originally called Ferdinand after their designer, Ferdinand Porsche—were presented to Hitler on March 19th, 1943. In “kills per loss”, the Ferdinand might have been the most successful tank destroyer of the war. At 70 tons, the Ferdinand was slow, but its extreme firepower/protection ratio gave it an enormous advantage. Its armor plate was as thick as 8 in. on the front, intended to flatten obstacles and clear the way for lighter vehicles. A six-man crew operated the high-powered 88mm gun, and the engines were located in the middle of the hull to give room for the armament at the rear. | | |
