At 188 tons, the Maus was the heaviest tank design to reach the prototype stage in WWII. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche, it was suitable classified as a super-heavy tank. It's ironic that the name Maus means "mouse" in German! The first V1 turretless prototype was completed by Alkett in December 1943, with testing commencing the same month with a mock turret. A production run of 150 tanks was envisaged, but when the war ended a total of only nine Maus tanks were found in various stages of completion. Dragon has produced a scale model of the mighty Maus as it appeared in its prototypical stage. The original V1 prototype featured a weighted mock-up to replicate the actual weight of the turret.
This item has been carefully reproduced on the model, and the whole vehicle is finished in a monotone sand color. The 1/72 scale model is presented in a fully completed mini-diorama, with the Maus ready to begin testing in water at the Boblingen testing facility. The concrete texture on this diorama is superbly rendered in a resin cold casting. This Maus is ready for its driving test!
Designed to meet Adolf Hitler's personal demand for an "indestructible" 120-ton super-heavy tank, the Panzer VIII Maus was prototyped in December 1943. Though fearsome in appearance, the Maus nonetheless proved to be an impractical design; the specs called for a Maximum speed of 12mph but no engine could be found that propel the massive machine to greater than 8.1mph. It was also too heavy to cross bridges, so designers had to create a system allowing it to ford rivers. Dragon's 1:72 scale Maus is masterfully replicated, with welding detail visible on its large, thick plates of interlocking armor. For maximum detail, this model has been constructed almost entirely of plastic, but discreet weights have been added internally to provide a heavy feel. Close inspection of this model reveals a number of highlights, including detailed engine intake, exhaust vents and electric motor cooling vents. On the underside is a maintenance panel and no less than 48 wheels with suspension details. Releases in the series include the V1 with mock-up turret, and the V2 with operational rotating turret and elevating 128 mm cannon.
