In terms of utility transport, the mainstay of the U.S. Armed Forces is undoubtedly the rugged HMMWV. This successful vehicle has been built in numerous variants, and it is estimated there could be around 12,000 of them currently operating in Iraq.
In 1981 the US government awarded AM General the contract for 55,000 HMMWVs. This High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Humvee) has assumed the military role previously filled by Jeep and is produced in several configurations: command and control systems, field ambulance, ammunition and troop and general cargo transport. Optional equipment includes a winch and supplemental armor. Variant armament carriers provide mounting and firing capabilities for heavy machine guns.
