The Atlantic Wall was a formidable series of fortifications stretching from France to Norway, and to breach it, the Allies needed special equipment. The point chosen to penetrate the seemingly impregnable fortress of Europe was Normandy, and D-Day was set as June 6, 1944. The massive seaborne invasion involved the greatest armada ever assembled, including a staggering 6939 naval vessels! This total included 4126 specialist landing ships/craft. Dragon’s new 1/72 diorama set features one such landing craft, an LCM(3), also known as a “Higgins” boat. The vessel was capable of carrying a single Sherman tank or 60 soldiers.
Dragon Armor's fantastic new set includes such a landing craft, plus an accurate and well-detailed M4A1 tank kit. The tank has been readied for the invasion by having deep-water wading stacks added. The M4A1 tank accurately reflects how a tank would have appeared when storming the beaches of Normandy. But there’s much more included in this Dragon Armor Diorama Set! A team of six U.S. infantrymen, a crew of three sailors for the LCM(3), plus a series of beach obstacles (so-called “hedgehogs”), are all offered. All these components come together on a complete diorama base provided in the box. Each item has been assembled and painted with great care. This is a truly comprehensive set that brings D-Day to life, thus enabling collectors to recreate one of the most momentous days of WWII!
This is a 1:72 scale D-Day beach-landing diorama, featuring an LCM(3) (also known as a "Higgins" boat) permanently fixed to the diorama base (figures and beach obstacles can be moved around at your discretion). Additional features include a movable bow ramp, simulated diamond plate top surface, and beautiful simulated weather effects. There are nine highly-detailed figures, including three crewmen (one to operate the boat and two to man the detachable .30 cal machine guns) and a team of six infantrymen. The six beach obstacles (aka "hedgehogs") complete the battle scene.
Originally developed by the British in 1920, the flat-bottom (LCM) Mechanized Landing Craft was constructed of steel and powered by two diesel engines, twin screws and rudders, which could be controlled from the pilothouse. These ‘walled barges’ were the link between the beach and the large transport ships that sat offshore. The LCMs’ huge bow ramps dropped upon landing to allow men and equipment to "hit the beach" in an amphibious assault. The pilot model of the M4 was completed in September 1941, and the Sherman became the most widely produced tank of the war. The M4 Sherman defeated heavier tanks with superior numbers, and by using outflanking tactics to strike thinner enemy flank armor. Shermans also achieved success with progressively upgunned models and by working with tank destroyers. The Sherman tank--named by the British--was fast, maneuverable, mechanically reliable, easy to manufacture, and effective in its infantry support role. Dragon’s 1:72 scale M4 Sherman tanks are constructed almost entirely of diecast plastic, which provides for the greatest possible level of detailing. Featuring a 360-degree rotating turret with elevating cannon, this model has hatches, hinges, welded amour plating and a turret that are all stunningly accurate, and the same level of detailing has been applied to the vehicle’s track system. The model’s underside features forward crew escape hatch, engine compartment access panels and wheel suspension components. Additional detailing includes delicate guards that shield both head lamps and textured lenses and tail lights. Subtle airbrushed weathering with hand-painted tools and equipment add a finishing touch.
