Douglas SBD-1 Dauntless Diecast Model
USMC VMB-2, 1940

1:48 Scale   Length   Width
Douglas SBD-1 Dauntless   8.25"   10.5"

The Douglas SBD Dauntless was a naval dive bomber made by Douglas during World War II. The SBD was the United States Navy's main dive bomber from mid-1940 until late 1943, when it was supplanted, although not entirely replaced, by the SB2C Helldiver.

Douglas SBD-1 Dauntless

First flown in 1938, The Douglas SBD Dauntless was the United States Navy's main dive-bomber during World War II. The Dauntless featured "Swiss cheese" flapsódive brakes punched with 3-inch holes, which helped it achieve pinpoint accuracy when diving to the target. The cockpit accommodated the pilot, who doubled as the bombardier and manned a fixed-forward gun. The rear cockpit contained a machine gun and played a major defensive role. During the Battle of Midway, SBD dive-bomber attacks fatally damaged all four of the Japanese aircraft carriers, and heavily damaged two cruisers.

The Franklin Mint's 1:48 scale Dauntless dive bombers are both large and heavy, weighing in at almost two pounds and constructed using only the smallest amount of plastic. Some of these models have sealed canopies and some have both canopies open with rear machine guns deployed for action. In this large scale, the pilot's cockpit and rear gunner's station are fully rendered with exceptional detail. Excellent radial engine detail is easily seen behind an all-metal propeller. The antenna mast and correctly modeled pitot tube are diecast metal, a feature uncommon in any scale.
