The UH-lB Iroquois Helicopter. Better known by the nickname "Huey", derived from the letters HU-l in its original designation, it was the backbone of the largest combat air force the world had ever seen. On countless missions during the war in Vietnam, it flew troops into battle and carried them back to safety. And when called upon to engage the enemy, it did so with devastating force. For with its armament of grenade launchers, Gatling guns and rocket launchers, it was the ultimate gunship. Workhorse of the war... angel in the sky, the "Huey" helicopter was a familiar - and reassuring sight to all those men and women fighting in the jungles of Vietnam. The legendary "Huey" was first built by Bell Helicopter Textron, in Fort Worth, Texas. Soon, however, as the world became more impressed with the power, speed, maneuverability and design of the "Huey," the chopper became an international vehicle and "Huey" helicopters began being built under license in West Germany, Italy, Japan, Turkey and Taiwan. A multi-function utility and transport vehicle, it has been used by such divergent organizations as the Italian police and the Royal Navy of the Netherlands. It is for their role in Vietnam, however, that the "Hueys" are most notable. To those who served with such valor, the "Huey" was the soaringsymbol of hope, providing cover in battle and carrying the wounded to safety. The first "Hueys" arrived in Vietnam in July of 1962 and were assigned to the Utility Tactical Transport Company (UTTCO). These initial vehicles were painted in factory high visibility scheme, until the Army began addressing the topic of camouflage. Afterwards, patterns and colors were based on unit preference and local command directives.

Now, the legendary "Huey" Helicopter, the UH-1B Iroquois, is re-created in a precision-engineered 1:48 scale replica, crafted by Franklin Mint Precision Models and officially presented by the Friends of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Packed with a full load of detail, from the vast array of armament to the realistic instruments and gauges in the cockpit, this Huey Helicopter is the ultimate model of the ultimate combat helicopter and it is certain to be a showpiece that you will admire for years to come.
