The Thunderbirds are the air demonstration squadron of the U.S. Air Force, based at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, Nevada. The squadron tours the United States and much of the world, performing aerobatic formation and solo flying in specially-marked USAF jet aircraft. The Thunderbirds traded their T-38s for F-16As in 1983 and in 1992 they upgraded to Block 32H/J F-16Cs. For the 2009 season, they are flying more powerful Block 52 F-16Cs. Includes metal display stand. Designed by General Dynamics to function as a lightweight USAF air-combat fighter, the F-16 was first flown on January 20th, 1974. This highly aerodynamic single-engine aircraft is one of the most successful aircraft designs of the Cold War. It has a mid-monoplane wing design, with the centerline of the fuselage dominated by a broad-mouth intake opening. It can carry a multitude of different weaponry, from runway-denial munitions and air-to-air missiles to anti-armor and anti-radar homing missiles, drop bombs and Maverick air-to-ground missiles. Under its large, clear-vision canopy the pilot is assisted by an array of digital systems including fly-by-wire controls. © Copyright 2003-2010 The Flying Mule, Inc.
