Designed to meet a need for a high-speed, long-distance airliner capable of operating on short runways, the Vickers VC10 was first flown on June 29, 1962. The aircraft was a technological triumph, setting a London to New York subsonic speed record that still stands today. Yet despite the VC10’s place in history as the fastest subsonic aircraft ever built, Vickers’ ongoing financial problems ultimately impacted demand and unfairly damaged the aircraft’s reputation. By the time production closed in 1970, only 54 airframes had been built.
