New mold! Following a long trial phase, including some technical obstacles, the first series production aircraft of the transport A400M were delivered in 2013. The A400M was developed to replace the quickly aging Transall C-160 and Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport and surpasses both in terms of range and freight capacity. EC-404 was the fourth test aircraft and received the nickname "Grizzly 4". Later on, the official nickname of the A400M was changed to "Atlas", named after the world-carrying titan of Greek mythology.

Airbus A400M Atlas

Designed as a tactical/strategic airlifter replacement for the C-130 for several NATO countries, the A400M was first flown on December 11th, 2009. Like many Airbus commerical aircraft, the A400M features a full glass cockpit and a fly-by-wire control system with flight envelope protection. The airframe and wings make extensive use of composite materials while the engines turn high-efficiency eight-bladed scimitar propellers. Crewed by two pilots and one loadmaster, the A400M can be configured for cargo transport, troop transport, medical evacuation, aerial refuelling and electronic surveillance. It is capable of lifting close to 30 tons of equipment or 116 fully-equipped troops.
