Grumman F-14A Tomcat   3.75"   3.75"

F-14B #162923 wore this dazzling paint scheme briefly in September/October 1995. The generous use of red paint earned it the nickname "Tomato".

US Navy Attack Fighter Squadron 101 (VF-101) Grim Reapers was established on May 1st, 1952 at NAS Cecil Field, Florida, flying the FG-1D Corsair. The squadron quickly moved into the jet era with the F2H-2 Banshee while in Korea. After progressing through the F4D-1 Skyray, F3H-2 Demon and F-4 Phantom II, the squadron began flying the F-14 Tomcat in January 1976. The Reapers went on to fly the Tomcat for almost 30 years before being disestablished in September 2005. The squadron was later reactivated in 2012 as Strike Fighter Squadron 101 (VFA-101) with the F-35C Lightning II JSF.

Grumman F-14A Tomcat

Designed to carry the formidable long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat was first flown on December 21st, 1970. Made famous by the Hollywood film Top Gun, the F-14 replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter. Its design includes a variable geometry wing that can sweep back for high speed supersonic intercepts and forward for improved positioning in air to air dogfights. Nicknamed "Bombcat," the F-14 spent much of its late career in an air-to-ground role, carrying the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system.
