First formed in 1942 as VMF-311 and in 1958 renamed VMA-311 “Tomcats” with a tail designator “WL” and a patch with “Sylvester the Pussycat” riding a missile. In July 1978 VMA-311 received 13 new A-4Ms plus 3 transferred from VMA-214 and the 11th aircraft was Bu No. 159473. The modex number painted on the nose is 460 until about 1981 when changed to 11. VMA-311 A-4Ms spent most of their time in Japan until June 1988 when they moved to Yuma and transitioned to the AV8B Harrier. First flown on June 22, 1954, the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk is a carrier-capable aircraft designed for the United States Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. Its combat career began with the first American carrier launched raids on North Vietnam on Aug. 4, 1964. The mission of A-4 squadrons is to attack and destroy surface targets in support of the landing force commander. All models have two internally mounted 20mm cannons, and are capable of delivering conventional and nuclear weapons under day and night visual conditions. There are numerous versions of the A-4, with improvements that include an avionics-housing "hump" just behind the cockpit. © Copyright 2003-2010 The Flying Mule, Inc.
