During 1979 and 1980 the JASDF received 14 unarmed RF-4E's from the U.S. These were to replace the aging RF-86F Sabres they had been using for reconnaissance. In 1982 a program was started to update the JASDF F-4EJ's by strengthening the structure, adding the in-flight re-fuelling probe, new avionics such as improved radar, new computers and wired for Sidewinders. The upgraded aircraft were given the designation F-4EJ Kai (Kai – short for kaizen or improvement). Included in the upgrade were 13 of the 14 RF-4E that received new radars and were referred to as RF-4E Kai. These RF-4E Kai were operated by 501 Hikotai (squadron).
The twin-engine, two-seat, all-weather attack/fighter F-4 Phantom II first flew on May 27th, 1958. The Phantom performed three tactical air roles—air superiority, interdiction and close air support—and was also a capable tactical reconnaissance and Wild Weasel (suppression of enemy air defenses) aircraft. It was armed with missiles and was the first Navy fighter that did not use guns. In air combat the Phantom's powerful thrust permitted a skilled pilot to engage and disengage from the fight at will. © Copyright 2003-2010 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Hobby Master's 1:72 scale F-4 Phantom II is highly detailed and very popular among collectors. This model has an intricately crafted fuselage, with rear and forward canopies that open to expose cockpit interior details such as instrument panel dials, control stick and ejector seat handles. The solid metal wing has raised wing-tips and a dog-toothed leading edge that blends seamlessly into the fuselage. Each release includes a full complement of removable ordnance. Variants in this series have notable differences in the nose and/or tail fin and slight variations in the engines’ exhaust. Carrier-based variants have elevators with a raised leading edge, and land-based variants have standard leading edges.
