1:72 Scale   Length   Width
Republic F-105D Thunderchief   10.75"   5.75"

The F-105D was first accepted on September 28 1960 and became the major variant with 610 aircraft being built. Intended for a nuclear strike role but since the nuclear threat became less likely the role became a high-speed bomber. The Pitot tube was moved to the nose that had been extended approximately 15 inches more than the “B”. The “D” received strengthened landing gear and an arrestor hook in case it over shot the runway. During 1966 and 1967 F-105Ds managed to down 25 MiGs using the 20-mm cannon and 2 other using Side-Winder missiles.

In Vietnam F-105D s/n 60-5375 was flown by WWII triple Ace Colonel Clarence “Bud” Anderson Jr. In 1970 Bud assumed the job of Wing Commander of the 355th TFW based at Takhli, Thailand. He flew his last 25 missions piloting the F-105D called “Old Crow II” in honor of his WWII P-51. In 1972 after 30 consecutive years of service with the USAF Bud retired. Anderson had flown over 7,500 hours and was awarded over 25 medals and citations. F-105D s/n 60-5375 was destroyed in a mid-air collision in 1974.

Republic F-105D Thunderchief

Designed for the USAF to replace the F-84, the F-105 was first flown on October 22nd, 1965. This fighter-bomber served extensively in the Vietnam War. Thunderchiefs presented a notoriously high stance—sharply angled engine intakes positioned on either side of the wing roots fed a single beefy Pratt & Whitney J57-P-5 engine. Standard armament included a single M61 Vulcan 20mm cannon—firing 6,000 rounds per minute—a mix of drop bombs, fire bombs, air-to-air missiles, air-to-surface missiles and rocket pods. With its impressive performance capabilities, the Thunderchief proved its effectiveness, reliability and value against a variety of targets in a variety of roles.
