On July 1 1958 the 4th FW was re-designated 4th TFW and in 1960 changed from the F-100 to the F-105B. In first six months of 1964 the B’s were replaced with the F-105D/F variant. During the Cuban Missile Crisis the 4th was deployed to Florida and ready to react if called upon. In August 1965 the 334th TFS deployed to Takhli RTAFB and remained there until October 1966. The air crews returned to Seymour Johnson AFB but left their F-105s behind. In 1967 the 334th began to transition to the F-4 Phantom II. Aircraft 61-0183 was a series F-105D-25-RE with only 80 being built. This series was the first of the D models to be equipped with all the conventional warfare modifications. On July 6 1973 61-0183 was sent to MASDC (Military Aircraft Storage & Disposition Center) for storage as #FK0001 and was scrapped in 1984. Designed for the USAF to replace the F-84, the F-105 was first flown on October 22nd, 1965. This fighter-bomber served extensively in the Vietnam War. Thunderchiefs presented a notoriously high stance—sharply angled engine intakes positioned on either side of the wing roots fed a single beefy Pratt & Whitney J57-P-5 engine. Standard armament included a single M61 Vulcan 20mm cannon—firing 6,000 rounds per minute—a mix of drop bombs, fire bombs, air-to-air missiles, air-to-surface missiles and rocket pods. With its impressive performance capabilities, the Thunderchief proved its effectiveness, reliability and value against a variety of targets in a variety of roles.© Copyright 2003-2010 The Flying Mule, Inc.
