The maiden flight of the first Japan Self Defence Force Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II took place on August 24, 2016 and delivered to Luke AFB, Arizona. The F-35A 69-8701 (also designated AX-1) will become part of the international training fleet operated by the 944th FW. Japan has agreed to purchase 28 F-35As over 5 years with possibly acquiring an additional 14 aircraft. The first aircraft to arrive in Japan will be based at Misawa AB operated by the 301 and 302 Squadrons. 38 aircraft will be license-built in Japan by Mitsubishi. Designed to meet the US Military's requirement for a multi-role Joint Strike Fighter, the F-35 was first flown on December 15, 2006. This single-seat fighter is one of the most advanced aircraft of our time, said to be four times more effective at air-to-air combat and eight times more effective at air-to-ground combat than any other existing aircraft. It uses a low-maintenance stealth technology, and some versions have an innovative Lift System, which gives the F-35 vertical take-off and landing capabilities. The US plans to buy a total of 2,443 F-35s at a cost of $323 billion, which makes the F-35 the most expensive defense program in history. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
