Northrop Grumman E-2C 165256 c/n FR-2 is the second of this aircraft type for the French Navy 4th Flotille. The U.S. and France are the only countries operating the E-2C from an aircraft carrier. The first two E-2Cs for the French Navy were Group 2 standards equipped and delivered in December 1998 and April 1999. The third aircraft was built to Hawkeye 2000 standards and delivered in 2004. In 2007 a 4th E-2C with Hawkeye 2000 standards was ordered and the first 2 E-2Cs upgraded to Hawkeye 2000 standards.
Designed as a replacement for the E-1 Tracer, the Grumman E-2 Hawkeye was first flown in 1960. This all-weather tactical Airborne Early Warning aircraft is the only aircraft-carrier capable aircraft to carry a large rotating dome, which houses the antennas for its long-range radars. Used primarily by the US Navy, the E-2 provides surveillance and airborne early warning of anti-ship and enemy aircraft attacks. Sometimes called "The Hummer" because of its distinctive engine sounds, the E-2 is one of only two propeller airplanes that currently operate from aircraft carriers. The E-2 is still undergoing upgrades, with the modern E-2D taking its first flight in August 2007. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
