Grumman F-14A 160382 C/N 238 was delivered to the USN on April 8, 1977 and assigned to VF-84 "Jolly Rogers" making its first cruise on board the USS Nimitz between December 1, 1977 and July 20, 1978 to the Mediterranean. 160382 had a role in the 1980 movie "Final Countdown". This aircraft was also the main feature in the well known lithograph "Tomcat". Later 160382 spent time with VF-11 and VF-51 then retired to the National Naval Aviation Museum and now loaned to the Museum of Flight wearing a 1977 VF-84 scheme. Designed to carry the formidable long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat was first flown on December 21st, 1970. Made famous by the Hollywood film Top Gun, the F-14 replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter. Its design includes a variable geometry wing that can sweep back for high speed supersonic intercepts and forward for improved positioning in air to air dogfights. Nicknamed "Bombcat," the F-14 spent much of its late career in an air-to-ground role, carrying the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
