In June 1946 the “Blue Angels” first leader was LCDR Roy “Butch” Voris and they flew 3 Grumman F6F Hellcats. Voris chose “Blue Angels” after seeing an ad for a New York nightclub of the same name. Only two months later the team transitioned to the F8F Bearcat. In 1947 Dusty Rhodes joined the BA along with a new leader LCDR Robert Clarke. Clarke added a 4th aircraft to the team. On January 9, 1948 Rhodes became the leader until January 11, 1950. During his tenure the BA moved to its first jet aircraft the Grumman F9F-2 Panther. Limited Edition of 1200 pieces worldwide. Designed as a carrierborne jet fighter for the US Navy, the F9F was first flown on November 24th, 1947. During the Korean War, the Panther was the Navy’s most heavily used jet fighter. It flew 78,000 sorties and was responsible for the first US Navy air to air kill of the conflict. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Nene engines, the Panther’s armament included four 20mm cannons and two bombs or an assortment of rockets. The wingtip fuel tanks and dark sea blue coloring made the aircraft extremely recognizable. The Panther was such a successful design that in 1949 it became the first jet flown by the "Blue Angels." © Copyright 2003-2010 The Flying Mule, Inc.
