This aircraft is W.Nr. 681382 flown by Hauptmann Wilhelm Moritz and is painted with a "Black Double Chevron" (denoted a Gruppenkommandeur). Moritz was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of IV.(Sturm)/JG 3 on 18 April 1944. The Gruppe specialized in anti-bomber operations flying heavily armoured and armed single-engined fighters. In July 1944 he was awarded the Ritterkreuz (Knight’s Cross) and on October 1st, he was promoted to the rank of Major. However on December 5th, Moritz had a nervous breakdown and was relieved from command of IV.(Sturm)/JG 3. Over the length of his career Moritz flew more than 500 missions and credited with 44 victories. Limited Edition of 1000 pieces worldwide. Designed by Kurt Tank, the Fw-190A was first flown on June 1st, 1939. This small, yet ferociously-powered aircraft was fast and maneuverable and packed a fierce armament package earning it the nickname "Butcher Bird". The wide landing gear, excellent visibility and high-altitude paddle-bladed propeller endeared it to pilots familiar with the shortcomings of its predecessor - the Messerschmitt Bf 109. Some of the Luftwaffe's most famous fighter aces flew the Fw 190. Many variants were produced during the war, with the most notable being the inline-engine equipped and longer-nosed 190D, known as the "Dora."© Copyright 2003-2010 The Flying Mule, Inc.
