The 352nd FG was activated October 1, 1942 and arrived at RAF Bodney on April 14, 1943. Upon arrival the aircraft received their distinctive blue paint schemes. On April 8, 1944 the 352nd FG received their P-51Bs with 43-6506 HO-Y piloted by John "Muscles" Bennett of the 487th FS also had a fearsome Tiger-Mouth in addition to the blue nose. With nearly 60,000 combat hours, 519 aerial victories and 287 destroyed on the ground the Germans referred to the 352nd FG as "The Blue Nosed Bastards of Bodney". Designed to meet an RAF requirement for fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft, the P-51 Mustang was first flown on October 26th, 1940. This versatile aircraft was capable of escorting bombers on long-range missions, engaging in dogfights, and dropping down to destroy German targets on the ground. At least eight versions of the P-51 were produced, but it was the definitive P-51D that gave the Mustang its classic warbird appearance. Britain and the US both tested the airframe with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, which gave the aircraft tremendous performance gains.
