A Front (Soviet army group) consists of several field armies of between 400,000 – 1.5 million troops that are usually responsible for a particular geographic area and commanded by a single General or Field Marshal. In early 1945 the 1st Ukrainian Front was involved in the "Vistula-Oder Strategic Offensive". This offensive began at the Vistula River in Poland in mid January 1945 and lasted about 3 weeks. Soviet forces engaged German troops in numerous battles and forced them back to the Oder River that is about 50 miles from Berlin. After this the 1st took part in the advance to Leipzig, Dresden and finally Prague. On June 10, 1945 the 1st was disbanded.
Desinged as a heavy tank with thick armour to counter German 88mm guns, the JS-2 (more correctly called IS-2 after its namesake Iosef Stalin) entered production in 1943. Experience with the KV series of heavy tanks led the designers to place an emphasis on speed and firepower. The latter requirement was met by the use of a 122mm A-19 gun firing high explosive rounds that could take on fortified positions in addition to being a capable anti-personnel weapon. The large shells however, resulted in a slow rate of fire which limited it's ability to engage enemy tanks. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
