Kradschutzen Battalions (Motorcycle Rifle Battalions) were equipped with various machine guns. Late in 1941 these Kradschutzen became part of the Panzer Reconnaissance Battalions and gradually converted from motorcycles to light armoured cars and half-tracks. In August 1942 the 24th Panzer-Division was assigned to the 4th Panzer Army South and at first was held in reserve. In January 1943 the Division was virtually destroyed at Stalingrad and was reformed from scratch in April 1943 in France. In 1943 the Kradschützen Battalions were abolished and reformed into Panzersufklärungs-Abteilungen.
The Leichter Panzerspähwagen was light-weight, four-wheel drive armoured reconnaissance vehicle. The vehicle was constructed by assembling an angled armour-plated body on top of a Horch 801 Heavy Car chassis, and adding an open turret that carried a 2cm KwK 30 L/55 autocannon as well as a 7.92mm MG34 machine gun. They type was used by reconnaissance battalions of the Panzer divisions and proved quite capable on the paved roads of Western Europe. Unfortunately, its performance was found to be inadquate for off-road use in the Eastern Front and Northern Africa, where Half-Tracks proved more capable. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Hobby Master's 1:48 scale Leichter Panzerspahwagen is constructed almost entirely in plastic for accurate replication of intricate details. The model's hull features separately applied equipment such as a spare tire, shovel and jack with fine scale tow hooks at the front and rear of the model. The fixed top turret can be configured with the simulated anti-grenade screen in the open or closed position. In the open position, details of the pivoting 2cm auto cannon are clearly visible. The model's underside reveals scale details of the vehicles drive train and suspension, such as simulated coiled springs on the wish-bone suspension and twin engine exhaust.
